Review: The Mummy Demastered (Steam)

As an elite agent in the monster-hunting Prodigium organization, you must use a variety of weapons, upgrades, and mysterious artifacts to defend mankind against the supernatural hordes of Princess Ahmanet.

Pros:

  • Lush pixel graphics.
  • 460MB Download size.
  • Steam achievements.
  • Controller support.
  • Three save slots.
  • Graphics- Resolution and screen mode.
  • Can rebind keyboard buttons.
  • Opening but also ongoing tutorial support.
  • Eeerie chiptune soundtrack.
  • Save points dotted around the maps.
  • Action platformer gameplay.
  • Contra/Metroid feel to it all.
  • Map and minimap on a grid to make navigation easier. Grids light up as you discover them, Points of interest get added like waypoints and save locations.
  • Percentage tracker.
  • Hidden collectibles.
  • Find exits too fast travel between them.
  • One big world split into locations.
  • When you die you lose all your weapons and abilities collected and the body comes back to life. They can then use your weapons and abilities against you. When you kill them you then get your stuff back and they are marked on the map.
  • Health/ammo drops from enemies and breakable objects.
  • Big screen-filling boss battles.
  • Some truly gorgeous locations to explore.
  • Old school in both look and feel.
  • Simple to learn.
  • Rewards exploration with hidden rooms and routes.
  • Weapons/abilities can be found and include things like new guns or grenades or the ability to climb ceilings.
  • A lot of back and forth as your abilities grow, New ways to traverse the land become possible.
  • You can jump dodge, crouch, and roll around the map.
  • A 2D world with a 3D backdrop.
  • Many enemy types from bats to spiders to your own dead corpse.

Cons:

  • No way to rebind controller buttons.
  • Enemies can go through walls and attack through them.
  • The screen can get very busy.
  • The minimap is not that helpful.
  • Annoying knockback when hit.
  • Few tedious platforming sections.
  • Can easily lose track of where to go and what to do if you are not careful.
