Review: Outbuddies (Steam)

Run, gun and explore an open undercity in this otherworldly non-linear Metroidvania adventure about the Old Gods, strange creatures and the remnants of a lost world!

Pros:

  • Classic 8 Bit graphics.
  • 207mb download size.
  • Graphics-dynamic/fixed/min-max, v-sync, 8 bit colour palette.
  • Steam achievements along with its own in-game achievements.
  • Controller support.
  • Rebind both controlled and mouse/keyboard.
  • Metroidvania gameplay.
  • Four save slots.
  • The map fills in as you play.
  • Buddy system-take control of your buddy to scan areas, move around freely and move objects with telekinesis.
  • Co-op support-player 2 controls the buddy.
  • Tutorial pop-ups/animated screens as you play.
  • Solid platforming.
  • Play how you want.
  • Find objects to unlock new abilities.
  • Beautiful synth styled soundtrack.
  • Interesting characters/enemies.
  • Savepoints.
  • Constant checkpoints at the beginning of each new screen.
  • Open world.
  • Big boss encounters.
  • Memorable experience.
  • Speed run encouraged.

Cons:

  • Tutorials are not always clear.
  • No guidance can hinder progress.
  • Confusing menu in that you can accidentally back out to the main menu.
  • Difficult.
  • Using your buddy can be tricky especially with the telekinesis.
  • Minimal graphics options.
  • Slow burner.
  • Little replayability.
