Review: Plantera (3DS)

In Plantera you build your own garden and watch it grow with new plants, bushes, trees and animals. As you play and expand your garden you will attract Helpers, round blue creatures that will help you with your harvesting tasks.

Pros:

  • Nice pixel graphics.
  • Download size: 120 blocks.
  • Own in game achievements.
  • Easy controls with the game using touchscreen predominately but some face buttons can be used in menu choices.
  • Clicker game play. In other words the game can actually play itself.
  • Game is played on the bottom screen, Top screen shows level bar, And a tally chart of what plants/trees and bushes you currently have. Shows money and any extras like multipliers etc.
  • Four animals to place in your farm. They can drop items worth more gold than others. Pig for example can dig up one of a handful of items all varying in gold amount.
  • Five tree types to unlock and plant. Fruit will drop once ripe, You can of course click on them before that. And helpers will collect any drop fruit that you dont click yourself.
  • Five bush types to unlock and plant.
  • Five plants to unlock and plant.
  • Scarecrow and dog can be purchased and they will ward off intruders.
  • Several intruders will attempt to steal your fruit! From moles,Ladybugs to wolves and foxes.
  • Multiplier: You can purchase upgrades to increase the amount of gold you get per click on all items in your garden.
  • Alarm clock: This sets how long your helpers will work after you turn the game off. You increase it by the hour.
  • Stupidly easy to get into too.
  • Addictive.
  • Earn EXP and level up to unlock new items and improve current unlocks.
  • Unlock extensions to your level. You have three arrows you can click that sends you to the far left, far right or centre.

Cons:

  • Feels good at the start but it soon feels like you have seen and done everything, Basically I’m saying it lacks any real depth.
  • The music is not good, It will drive you to the mute button so fast.
  • Feels a bit like the helpers don’t always do “help” they seem to spend more time just walking backwards and forwards.
  • Slowdown when you get further in and the fruit builds up.
  • No 3D implementation which is a huge missed opportunity.
  • Got rid of the bonus Knight. This guy would randomly appear and each click on him would net you gold.
  • Birds and foxes are way too common and it just feels like its too much and almost makes it feel a bit like a arcade version of Plantera.

Summary

Ok so a clicker game has finally landed on 3DS. Plantera is one of the more cartoony looking clickers so to be honest it looks right at home on the 3DS. A clicker does work on the 3DS due to the touchscreen and mobile nature of it all. Right so Plantera is a fun addictive little game that sees you planting shrubs and trees and picking fruit to earn EXP and cash to buy more items and animals, All this whilst protecting your fruit from wolves, Foxes and birds. Its a game that will draw in gamers quickly and the addictive methodology will keep them hooked there for a long time. Its a proper time waster but the good/bad news is you can soon tire of it. After a few hours you will unlock all the plant items, You will have many multipliers and bonuses. Its then that it goes all been there seen it. In short its a great clicker gamer but it just lacks any real depth to keep it going past a few hours.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
