Review: Risk of Rain (PS4/Vita)
Risk of Rain is an action platformer with roguelike elements. With permanent death as a primary feature, players will have to play their best to get as far as possible. Fight on a mysterious planet with randomly spawning enemies and bosses, either alone or with 3 friends in online co-op.
Cons:
- Pixel graphics.
- Awesome soundtrack.
- Action platformer with roguelike elements.
- Earn exp and cash by killing enemies and opening chests.
- Level up to increase your health bar.
- Use cash to buy items and open bigger chests or gamble on statues.
- Huge selection of game changing passives. Items like more health, stronger weapons, better luck chance and so much more.
- Special move: Find/buy powerful attacks. Comes with its own cooldown.
- Massive boss fights.
- Timer to see how long you survive. As you level up and time increases, So does the difficulty.
- Three difficulties to start from: easy, Medium and Insane.
- 12 Characters to unlock and use. You initially start with just one.
- Four player online co-op.
- (PS4) Local four player co-op.
- Item log: shows which items you have found with a brief description.
- Monster log: Displays monsters you have encountered and slain.
- Full stat screen showing loads of stats like longest run, Most kills, favorite character and so much more.
- General page shows overall game completion and top scores.
- Can rebind controls on both consoles.
- Options: Damage numbers on/off and notifications of weapons on/off.
- Cross buy.
- 15 Trophies to unlock.
- Touch screen/ DS4 Touchpad used to act like a mouse.
- Artifacts: Find game changing items you select at the start of the game.
- Teleporter: Find it and activate it to trigger the boss fight. First you need to survive the 90 seconds then you clean up any left over enemies. An arrow will show you enemy location.
- Levels randomize every life/level completion.
- Seamless cross save.
- At the start of level one it shows all the controls.Addictive gameplay.
- Easy to get into.
Cons:
- No online leaderboards.
- (Vita) Text is far too small and can overlap.
- No cross save button to make sure its synched.
- Touchscreen/pad is not needed.
- Game is all luck based with no real skill apart from staying alive.
- Repetitive game play.
