Review: Vikings – Wolves of Midgard (PlayStation 4)
As clan chief, you must save Midgard from complete annihilation, and spearhead the charge to vanquish the fiendish creatures of the Fimbulwinter.
Pros:
- Nice graphics, Great looking locations.
- 11.55GB Download size.
- Opening tutorial.
- Two classes warrior or shield maiden.
- Choose your Deity- Tyr, Loki, Thor, Skathi and Odin. This basically determines what weapon you start with and the sort of abilities you unlock later on.
- Hardcore mode available.
- Four difficulties- Easy, Normal, Hard and insane.
- ARPG game play so its in the same genre as Diablo.
- You have multiple weapon sets and can quickly jump between them.
- Blood is collected from defeated enemies and used to level up or upgrade the altar.
- Level up choices- Health, Damage, Attack speed, Elemental resistance and armour.
- Upgrading an Altar will grant you better upgrades.
- Blacksmith to craft dismantle armour and weapons.
- Decent voice acting.
- Mini map with markers to help in questing.
- You suffer from the elements like cold/hot.
- Combo counter which grants bonus blood.
- Levels have bonus side quests.
- Full stats screen.
- Aside from the main campaign you have raids and hunts which are re playable. In these its just a bite size mission or kill x amount of enemies.
- Supports online with hosting and finding a game options. Supports LAN.
- When you take over a settlement in the game you can choose whether to plunder or keep the settlement. Keep means you get a bonus amount of resources at the end of every level completion while as plunder means you get a one off big resource gain.
- Hidden chests/routes.
- Big open levels.
- Map uncovers as you traverse the land.
- Dedicated boss arena.
- Power booths work like shrines in Diablo where you get a buff for a set amount of time.
- Good story with decent narration over the top.
- Checkpoints throughout.
- Destructible environments.
- Slow motion death animations.
- Unlock and use abilities.
- Fun to play.
- Great sound work.
- Best played with friends.
- Full unlock tree of abilities so you can craft your own unique hero.
- Full Platinum trophy.
- You have a main hub where you visit the blacksmith or use the Altar and of course pick which level you want to invade next!
- Good variety of enemy types each with unique attacks.
Cons:
- Really slow starter.
- Some cheesy dialogue/execution.
- Loot drops are minimal and stingy.
- Level mechanics are not always explained.
- A lot of loading screens.
- Navigating the menus are clunky, Its all laid out in a confusing way and makes upgrading or unlocking abilities a real pain in the ass.
- Gifts and leveling up is only briefly explained.
- Had a couple of instances where a mission ticker would reset mid level.
- Blood doesn’t always come to you despite being in range.
- No online search/filter options meaning your at the mercy of the internet gods.
- Slow to upgrade Altars and the blacksmiths.
- Slowdown and frame drops in built up areas.
- Never really sure if the game has saved.
- A lot of empty space and time between mob fights.
