Review: Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA (PlayStation 4)

Adol awakens shipwrecked and stranded on a cursed island. There, he and the other shipwrecked passengers he rescues form a village to challenge fearsome beasts and mysterious ruins on the isolated island.

Pros:

  • Nice detailed almost anime looking graphics.
  • 15.72GB Download size.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • Japanese audio supported.
  • Five difficulties-Normal, hard, nightmare and inferno.
  • Options-Text speed, Autosave on/off, Sensitivity sliders, HUD options.
  • Can rebind all keys.
  • Mini map-Shows objectives, enemies and loot. Also has a feature where it will leave a trail of where you have been.
  • DS4 touchpad support.
  • RPG gameplay.
  • Recruit team members, Direct them in fights.
  • Strong decent story.
  • Extra skill- Do enough attacks you fill a bar and can do a mega attack.
  • Combat- Almost Bayonetta/DMC in style. Its open and you can attack who you want and do evasion moves to slow down time. You can do combos and team attacks.
  • Earn EXP and level up to increase stats.
  • Huge boss battles.
  • Interactive conversations.
  • Loot- Chests and drops from enemies.
  • Checkpoints which also heal you.
  • Huge open locations.
  • Wide variety of enemies that all feel unique and different.
  • Controls are easy to learn.
  • Tutorial pop ups.
  • Fun to play.
  • AI team members are an assets and can do well without man management.
  • Very streamlined.
  • You can see enemies roaming and engage them.
  • Secret areas.

Cons:

  • Lots of loading screens.
  • Music begins to all sound the same.
  • Constantly stop start at the beginning.
  • Some barrels/environment break whilst some dont.
  • Camera can go a little awry.
  • Slow starter.
  • Mini map soon clogs up.
  • All enemies re spawn quickly meaning a lot of repetition but can be could for grinding.
  • Few cheesy voice parts.
