Summary

Going back after playing the original release on PC is always going to be fun as Sable is great fun but it is annoying however that the performance issues that dogged the original release are still present but again I let it go. Let’s be honest, Sable looks gorgeous, it goes for a kinda stop-animation style that coupled with the colors and art makes a really unique-looking game. Now we have all been burnt by good-looking games playing badly or the gameplay never matching the style. Sable is not one of those, in fact, it’s a dam good example of solid gameplay married to a unique style. OK so it performs kinda shitty with a lot of screen tearing and slowdown but that’s all fixable and it didn’t stop me absolutely destroying the game. The first hour is slow and kinda tedious as you learn everything but you then realize it’s all just a big tutorial, you walk out of the doorway, and bam the world is vast and full of wonder, I likened it to when you first leave the vault in Fallout, it’s a proper Jaw-dropping moment. You thought the game was kinda OK but repetitive and here you are in a massive open world and you can do whatever you want and however, you want. You have a trusty ship that you can summon, a bubble that allows you to glide for a short while, find a lot of platforming puzzles and hidden rooms and areas to get loot and earn/find new clothing to represent you. Medals are awarded for particular accomplishments, I just couldn’t get over the scope of it all. I did have my doubts early on but once the “game” starts so does the fairytale and your unique adventure. Sable is a beautiful if sometimes chaotic experience that marries style with substance.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
