Summary

Skelethrone: The Chronicles of Ericona offers a visually appealing experience with its decent pixel art graphics and a manageable download size of 2.17GB. The game includes a platinum trophy for completionists and allows players to remap controls, providing a customizable gameplay experience. The screen settings are comprehensive, allowing adjustments to brightness, contrast, saturation, screenshake, and player/enemy outlines. Players can tailor their adventure to their preferences with three save slots and two difficulty modifiers—exploring (no hints) and journey (hints on the map). Additionally, the game offers two censorship options: original, which includes all nudity and brutality scenes, and special, which removes these elements.

The gameplay is reminiscent of Souls-like action RPGs, featuring tutorial pop-ups to guide players. The game is presented in 2D with 3D backdrops and animated foregrounds, creating a visually rich environment. Players collect essence shards and light lamp posts that act as respawn points. Upon death, players have one chance to retrieve all dropped essence, which is used for leveling up. The inventory system is straightforward, and the stamina bar is crucial for actions like blocking, jumping, attacking, and rolling. The game’s dark Gothic atmosphere enhances the immersive experience.

However, there are some inconsistencies, such as the odd mechanic where dying sometimes leaves previously killed enemies dead. The game features big boss battles and Metroidvania elements, with a map that fills out as you explore. Players can grab onto walls, slide down, and jump up ladders for faster movement. Unfortunately, the foreground art can obscure the view, and the tutorial pop-ups are quite basic. The game is challenging, with enemies blending into the background, making them hard to see even with outlines on. Bonfires, which serve as level-up points, healing spots, respawn points, and fast-travel locations, are spaced far apart, adding to the difficulty.

The game’s difficulty is further compounded by the lack of build-up or indication before boss fights, and the inconsistent enemy AI, which sometimes results in enemies looking the other way. Parrying is particularly challenging, and the game’s random drops from enemies and breakable pots can be frustrating. Despite these issues, the game offers a variety of weapons with special attacks and cooldown meters, a life bar health system with potions for healing, and the ability to pause the game. Each enemy has unique attack patterns to learn, and players can respawn enemies to farm essence for power leveling. The soundtrack is great, and the hack-and-slash combat includes both ranged and melee weapons.

In summary, Skelethrone: The Chronicles of Ericona is a well-designed game with many shortcuts and secrets to discover, even in already explored areas. The game’s essence shards can be used to upgrade your character via a massive knowledge tree, enhancing health, stamina, or strength. While the game has its flaws, such as difficult parrying, inconsistent enemy AI, and obscured views, it offers a rich, challenging experience with a great soundtrack and a variety of gameplay elements that will appeal to fans of the genre.
