  • The game is split up into acts.
  • A timer is always shown on the screen.
  • Bonus rooms like the medals one are a throwback to the original games Emerald rooms with an ever-rotating room with end-of-run drops and balls to change the direction of movement.
  • Another bonus room is where you have a time limit to swing from Orb to Orb and catch the Emerald or medal.
  • Battle mode is like a last-man-standing affair where you avoid projectiles and breaking platforms to outlive the others.

Sonic Superstars Review Cons:

  • Despite Sonic being a game about speed and always showing the timer, this game sure does put so much in you need to take your time.
  • Cannot rebind controls.
  • There is no tutorial apart from the Emerald powers and they expect you to have played Sonic games before.
  • So many tedious platforming sections with the carnival level being a highlight as one wrong bounce and you have to replay large chunks of the level again.
  • The Battle mode is a throwaway experience.
  • So many bonus rooms and bonus room ideas that it gets too much.
  • The story is nonexistent with no voice acting or text pop-ups, it’s all very muted.
  • Boss fights get dragged out by having them get hit once and then move a screen over every time.
  • It’s all the same themes of levels we had back in the original Sonic games.
  • With so much color and movement in the back and foregrounds, it can be hard to pick out enemies and these cheap shots are had.
  • With infinite lives, the fear and tension are gone and it’s just a battle of wills and attrition.
  • They expect you to sit and read the manual before anything else and have no in-game prompts or pop-ups.
  • It honestly feels like a game I have played before.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
