Starship Troopers Extermination Review Cons:

  • Any lag makes it really hard to play.
  • The tutorial is just about basic controls and mechanics and doesn’t prepare you for the gameplay.
  • Early gunplay is not great and feels loose.
  • Had several crashes when changing graphic settings.
  • The first few games are just pure chaos in a confusing way with little help or guidance offered.
  • A lot of the time it feels like you are just following people.
  • The menus are not great or responsive at the moment.
  • You don’t get menu feedback like notifications of new u locks in Loadout slots.
  • The a big learning curve for everything.
  • No matter what I do, the game never runs well at all, no benchmark test doesn’t help.
  • Has a lot more issues when playing with Steam big picture mode.
  • Doesn’t feature any characters from the film in any capacity.
  • You don’t have any customisation options just the Loadout.
  • The building has a slight learning curve.
  • Daunting menus and it’s not clear where to go or what to do, the modes could do with a description or even a text pop-up.
  • Aiming down sights on many guns is not great as they take up way too much screen real estate.

Summary

Starship Troopers: Extermination impresses with its gorgeous graphics and a manageable download size of 8.62GB. The game offers full controller support, and Steam achievements, and is officially licensed, ensuring an authentic experience. Players can enjoy optional cross-play support and set their matchmaking region for a more tailored gaming experience. The extensive graphics settings allow for customization, including window mode, resolution, fps limit, and more, ensuring the game runs smoothly on various systems. The ability to remap controls for both keyboard and controller adds to the game’s accessibility.

The game features three distinct classes: hunter (assault infantry), bastion (heavy infantry), and operator (support infantry), each with customizable loadouts including primary and secondary weapons, utility items, grenades, and perks. Players earn EXP and level up to unlock new gear and abilities, with each class having its own progression system. The first-person shooter gameplay is enhanced by an optional, replayable tutorial that helps players get accustomed to the mechanics. The game nails the atmosphere of the film, with bugs that look just like their movie counterparts and a boot camp tutorial that can be replayed for practice.

Building mechanics are a significant part of the gameplay, allowing players to construct walls, bases, and ammo drops on the fly. The process involves selecting what and where to build, then using a repair tool to complete the construction, with multiple players able to speed up the process. The game offers four difficulties, though only three are currently available, and integrates a full friends list with invite-to-party options. The “companies” feature acts as clan support, allowing players to join, rank up, and chat privately within their clan.

There are four game types: quick play, ARS (capture territories), Arc, and horde mode, each offering different challenges. Loading screens feature posters and adverts from the film, and the opening FedNet newscast sets up the level perfectly. The game supports 16-player co-op play and includes a solo-play tutorial mode with AI teammates, allowing players to earn EXP and level up even when playing alone. The game also features a separate building tutorial and season rewards for playing with others.

However, the game is not without its flaws. Lag can make it difficult to play, and the tutorial only covers basic controls and mechanics, leaving players unprepared for actual gameplay. Early gunplay feels loose and unsatisfying, and there have been several crashes when changing graphic settings. The first few games can feel chaotic and overwhelming.

In summary, Starship Troopers: Extermination offers a thrilling and immersive experience with its impressive graphics, extensive customization options, and faithful recreation of the film’s atmosphere. While it has some technical issues and a steep learning curve, the game’s addictive progression system and cooperative gameplay make it a must-play for fans of the franchise.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
