Sudden Market Review Cons:

  • Cannot rebind controls for the controller.
  • The controller doesn’t work in every menu.
  • It’s all about learning the layout of the shop and memory management.
  • Being caught is quick and immediate and not that great.
  • The tutorial is nothing but a level, it teaches you nothing.
  • Some items are not where I would expect.
  • You cannot get a hint or a general look at the store.
  • The pathfinding of the guards is very sporadic.
  • Picking up individual items is a real pain especially with the controller as you have to be pixel-perfect.
  • Anything you have to open first like freezers makes it tedious as you cannot identify an item until the door is open.
  • The security guard catching you and saying you didn’t pay is a bit weird as you are shopping, so, of course, you haven’t paid yet!
  • Not all abilities are tied to the controller.
  • Pausing the game means you need a mouse and keyboard to use or u pause as the controller doesn’t function.
  • Just the one layout.
  • Some items I have never heard of or are called something else here.
  • No online leaderboards.

Summary

Sudden Market has nice graphics and a 3D world to play in. It requires a download size of 729.81MB and does have 13 Steam achievements. The game offers various graphics settings including window mode, resolution, 3D resolution, v-sync, fps limit, post-processing, effects, and textures. It also supports controllers but has some limitations in rebinding controls for the controller and functioning in every menu.

The gameplay is centered around speedy food collecting. The goal is to collect all the items on a shopping list as quickly as possible. Players can highlight any item to get a description and pick up bonus items that drop on the floor. The controls are simple to learn, and the game moves at a fast pace. To complete the shopping, players need to visit the cashier. As players progress, new obstacles like security guards, signage blocking paths, and runaway trollies appear.

The game offers free DLC for cosmetics and allows players to unlock abilities that have a cool-down timer. It offers different game types, including time trials, and all of the shopping tasks are split up into many chapters. Players need to complete a certain percentage of a shopping list to unlock these chapters. The game also features a score menu that shows all your best times and shopping list completion percentages.

Despite its features, the game has some challenges. The tutorial is not very informative, and some items are not located where players might expect. The game does not offer hints or a general look at the store. The pathfinding of the guards is sporadic, and being caught is quick and immediate. Picking up individual items can be tedious, especially with the controller, as players have to be pixel-perfect. Some items, like those in freezers, cannot be identified until the door is open. The game has just one layout, and some items may be unfamiliar or called something else. It does not feature online leaderboards.

Overall, the game offers an addictive and fast-paced shopping experience with a variety of features and challenges. It’s all about learning the layout of the shop and managing memory effectively. However, there are some areas, like controller support and item identification, that could be improved for a better gaming experience. Basically, it is a supermarket sweep game but with Jeremy Kyle-style security guards. Next time you hear the beep think of the fun you might have playing Sudden Market which is not Supermarket Sweep in all but name.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
