  • In solo play, you press a button to swap between the two characters.

  • Puzzle pieces can be found.
  • A jigsaw puzzle is where you use found pieces and build the picture to get a new ability.
  • Touchpad support for the jigsaw portion of the game.
  • The narration is spot on with all the speech being in rhyme.
  • Officially licensed.
  • You can fast-forward the talking which makes the voice go all high-pitched and squeaky.
  • You can have the complete book read to you within the extras menu complete with all the original art.
  • 2D platformer but a 3D world where you can go into the background and play.
  • Slight camera control in that you can view around you.
  • Constant checkpoints.
  • Maintains the humor of the characters.
  • A good starter game for younger players or gamers who want a chill Switch off-your-brain type experience.
  • Levels have multiple routes.
  • End of level breakdown of presents collected percentage and puzzle pieces.
  • You can replay levels.
  • At times during a level, you will go into homes and here you have to avoid the gingerbread men/whos who want to hug you, you can hide in wardrobes and under tables to lose them.
  • Infinite lives.
  • Runner-style segments that have you running toward the screen avoiding holes and ledges.
  • The puzzles that give new abilities can branch so you have a choice of how you level up as it were.
  • Runner sections mix up the gameplay a bit.
  • Three locations each adding new enemies.
  • It is very relatable that the enemy of the game is strangers wanting to hug you.
  • Easy Platinum trophy.
  • You can roll a boulder or snowball to eliminate enemies and use it as a ledge.

The Grinch Christmas Adventures Review Cons:

  • Cannot rebind controls.
  • The camera can zoom out a bit too far.
  • The initial load and loading into extras is surprisingly long.
  • The general layout of a level gets tiresome.
  • The whole avoiding the gingerbread man is tiring especially as you can get hit by him without realising or he hits you as you go into a room or up the stairs.
  • The runner sections are at an angle that makes seeing everything quite tricky.
  • The Grinch hardly makes any noise at all.
  • When swapping characters it is jarring as the game doesn’t know what to do.
  • At times Max and don’t move and that causes you to stop at the screen edge and whistle.
  • All actions like hiding, whistling, and climbing are super slow.
  • Same enemies over and over.
  • The ending is not great and is very unsatisfying.

Summary

The Grinch Christmas Adventures is a 2.07GB download game that grants both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game. It’s a platformer game with an ongoing tutorial and the option for local co-op play. You can swap between two characters, Grinch and Max, and collect presents and puzzle pieces throughout the levels. The game features touchpad support for the jigsaw portion, rhyming narration, and the ability to fast-forward dialogue. It’s officially licensed and maintains the humor of the characters, making it a good starter game for younger players or those seeking a relaxed gaming experience.

The game offers multiple routes in levels and allows replaying of levels. It also features infinite lives and puzzles that give new abilities. However, it has some downsides such as long loading times, repetitive level layouts, and the same enemies appearing repeatedly. The camera can zoom out too far at times, and character swapping can be jarring. Some actions like hiding, whistling, and climbing are slow.

Despite these issues, The Grinch Christmas Adventures provides an easy Platinum trophy and a unique experience where the enemy of the game is strangers wanting to hug you. The game could be improved with more varied enemies and a more satisfying ending. Overall it is a great game for kids to play during December and parents may only need to help on the latter levels.
