The core of this adventure is an action-heavy, choose-your-own-adventure experience where you are constantly tracking real-world players through a brilliant story link mechanic. At the start, you adopt another player’s completed run as your baseline foundation, allowing you to witness their routes, copy their decisions, or violently forge your own path while the local characters react to your predecessor’s reputation. Everything generates a unique world seed you can pass along to others, meaning your petty acts or heroic saves directly rewrite their upcoming campaign events. Because every tide walker looks identical in their customizable suit, you can seamlessly pretend to be your story link or completely subvert their legacy to trick the local populations. If you play too efficiently or explore too much, you can actually outpace your story link’s thread entirely, triggering an intelligent fail-safe that forces you to forge ahead into uncharted waters alone.

While the meat of the experience comes down to tense question-and-answer encounters, exploration is entirely driven by piloting a small personal boat across the open waters to link up with various floating cities. You can hunt down floating homes for extra scrap, trigger optional ocean events, or find yourself suddenly ambushed by hostile raiders while travelling between regions. Engaging these threats means locking onto enemy hulls with your boat’s basic gun, carefully avoiding endangered fish strapped to their sides, and eventually boarding them for raw loot before they sink on a strict timer. Back on land, the gameplay shifts into basic environmental puzzle-solving, first-person stealth sequences, and exploration, where you find clipboards and sheets of paper stuffed with background lore. There is even an interactive donation box system that allows you to swap physical items across timelines with other players, alongside a built-in emote wheel that directly influences how future tide walkers perceive your ghost through specialised visual outlines.

  • Audio Quality: The voice work across the board is fantastic, adding massive personality to the cast.
  • Dynamic Audio Influence: Changing the music tracks on any in-game radio dynamically alters the background audio for the next real-world player passing through that area.
  • Race Glitch: Encountered a horrible graphical glitch during a boat race after going out of bounds; the visuals warped completely, and even though I recovered and won first place, the event bugged out and wouldn’t let me pose or finish the sequence properly.
  • Demo Discrepancies: A playable demo exists on PlayStation 5, which showcases the core gameplay loop well, but it functions as a mixed-up mash of late-game events, and nothing transfers over to the main game.

Summary

GOOD STUFF
The world is beautiful, incredibly bright, and it grabbed me instantly with a fantastic sense of adventure that encourages you to play exactly how you want. It is such a clever, unique concept that completely rewrites the adventure genre by making your single-player journey feel alive with the choices of real people. The voice work is fantastic, the cutscenes look brilliant with those massive impact font location names, and simple touches like changing a radio station or leaving items in donation boxes to alter another player’s game world are just awesome. Exploring the floating cities, upgraded boats, and hunting for scrap kept me hooked, and tracking the outlines of past tide walkers through your special vision makes the entire ocean feel incredibly deep and fascinating to map out.

BAD STUFF
The game is not without its frustrations, particularly when a horrible out-of-bounds glitch during a race turned the graphics completely weird and broke the entire ending sequence, so I couldn’t even finish or pose properly. First-person stealth can also be incredibly tricky and annoying to deal with because the perspective makes it genuinely hard to judge your surroundings and the enemy’s lines of sight accurately. It is also quite irritating that exploring everything and veering off the beaten path can cause you to accidentally outrun your story link thread entirely, making you lose that specific player connection just because you wanted to see the whole world. Additionally, the PlayStation 5 demo is a bit misleading since it is just a mismatched hodgepodge of random events, and absolutely none of your progress transfers over to the final game.

FINAL VERDICT
Tides Of Tomorrow is a brilliant, genuinely fresh experience that breathes completely new life into narrative adventure games. The asynchronous multiplayer loop is incredibly clever, creating a constant internal struggle over whether to fix or ruin the worlds of the players before you. Despite a couple of rough mechanical edges like clunky first-person stealth and some worrying out-of-bounds bugs, the sheer atmosphere and freedom of exploration make it impossible to put down. It grabbed me right from the start, and if you are looking for a completely unique journey that respects your intelligence, this is an absolute must-play.
