Ufouria The Saga 2 Review Pros:

  • Decent colorful felt style graphics.
  • 1.03GB download size.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • A long-awaited sequel to the original game released back in the 90s.
  • Runs at 60fps.
  • Platformer gameplay.
  • Tutorial signs as you play.
  • Collect coins in the level.
  • Attacks wise you can throw a papoon or jump and slam down with your butt.
  • Breaks tradition by playing the game from right to left rather than the traditional left to right in a fair few instances. (think Mario but running the opposite way)
  • Boss fights.
  • Bobodiri is your feathered friend who can at any point fly you home and you keep all bonuses earned so far.
  • Vending machines sell items and you use collected coins, to find Utsu cans to buy higher-grade items.
  • Items you can buy change the game like grabbing a map, a compass to help find Utsu Cans, making it so enemies could drop hearts, a crawling ability and so much more.
  • Friends play a huge part, they can show up in a situation, and pressing the button at the right time has them helping you like giving you coins or a heart, friends in your group mean you can hot swap between them.
  • Has a Metroidvania feel as you need certain items to reach previously unreachable or locked areas.
  • You can read initiate boss fights when replaying levels.
  • When revisiting a level you could get a bonus objective like speed run a level.
  • You get three lives to retry the current level, after that, you go back home and lose half your coins.
  • Level layouts can randomize every time you revisit.
  • It definitely has an open-world style feel and being a 2D game that is impressive.
  • There is always something to do from collecting coins for upgrades to scouting out new areas.

Ufouria The Saga 2 Review Cons:

  • Such a slow-paced game.
  • Levels all feel the same.
  • All the cutscenes are slow and tedious with no way to skip or fast forward them.
  • No voice work.
  • The game just feels flat and doesn’t have much in the way of atmosphere.
  • Breaking chests open drops a load of coins but they go everywhere and they disappear fast.
  • Getting hit causes a knockdown animation that is slow and needed.
  • You have a bit of a grind for coins to get the good stuff so a lot of replaying the same level.
  • When in the shop you can’t see your health so you don’t know if you need to buy health items.

Summary

Ufouria The Saga 2 is a long-awaited sequel to the original game released back in the 90s. It’s a platformer game with a Metroidvania feel, requiring certain items to reach previously unreachable or locked areas. The game has decent colorful felt style graphics and runs at 60fps. It’s a 1.03GB download and comes with a platinum trophy.

The gameplay involves collecting coins in the level and using them to buy items from vending machines. These items, like a map or a compass, can change the game dynamics significantly. For instance, they can help find Utsu cans to buy higher-grade items, make enemies drop hearts, or even add a crawling ability. Attacks include throwing a papoon or jumping and slamming down with your butt.

One unique aspect of the game is that it breaks tradition by playing the game from right to left rather than the traditional left to right in several instances. It also features boss fights and allows you to initiate these fights when replaying levels. When revisiting a level, you could get a bonus objective like speed running a level.

Your feathered friend, Bobodiri, can fly you home at any point, and you keep all bonuses earned so far. Friends play a huge part in the game. They can show up in a situation, and pressing the button at the right time has them helping you, like giving you coins or a heart. Friends in your group mean you can hot-swap between them.

However, the game has its downsides. It’s slow-paced, and all the levels feel the same. The cutscenes are slow and tedious with no way to skip or fast-forward them. There’s no voice work, and the game feels flat without much atmosphere. Breaking chests open drops a load of coins, but they go everywhere and disappear fast. Getting hit causes a slow knockdown animation. There’s a bit of a grind for coins to get the good stuff, so a lot of replaying at the same level is needed. When in the shop, you can’t see your health, so you don’t know if you need to buy health items.

Despite these drawbacks, the game definitely has an open-world style feel, which is impressive for a 2D game. There’s always something to do, from collecting coins for upgrades to scouting out new areas. The level layouts can randomize every time you revisit, adding to the replayability. You get three lives to retry the current level, after that, you go back home and lose half your coins. Overall, Ufouria The Saga 2 offers a unique and engaging gaming experience, despite some areas for improvement.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
