Whisker Squadron Survivor Review (Steam)

Whisker Squadron Survivor Review, A smooth roguelike shooter from the creators of RACE THE SUN, featuring a ragtag crew of feline pilots in a dramatic showdown against corporate-powered robots called The Swarm. Features a 3-act campaign with branching paths, epic boss fights, and a wide arsenal of characters, ships, and weapons.

Whisker Squadron Survivor Review Pros:

  • Decent graphics.
  • 1.17GB Download size.
  • Steam achievements.
  • Full controller support.
  • Graphics settings – resolution, fullscreen, and graphics quality preset.
  • Twitch TV integration.
  • Controller aim assist option.
  • Can remap controls for both the keyboard and the controller.
  • Accessibility options – reduce incoming damage, disable screenshakes, and reduce game speed.
  • 3 save slots.
  • Space shooter gameplay.
  • Opening tutorial section.
  • Still art for cutscenes and character interactions.
  • Boost is used when shooting and/or boosting.
  • 3D game world.
  • The hangar lets you pick any unlocked characters or ships and then equip main and secondary weapons.
  • Health bar and shield system.
  • Earn scrap from enemies and level up.
  • Looks and plays a bit like a StarFox love letter.
  • Each time you level up you pick one of three upgrades.
  • You can see enemy health bars.
  • Picking the same upgrade will improve that upgrade.
  • Your route through the game is a randomized webbed map where you choose the route at every step. Each stop generally has an icon so you have some idea of what to expect.
  • Piano heavy soundtrack.
  • End of run breakdown.
  • VP (Victory Points) are earned from runs and they unlock permanent upgrades for global, arrow ship, dagger ship, and hammer ship.
  • Different environments to play in.
  • Tunnel-based locations with many holes and doorways to pass through.
  • Fantastic visuals and color palette.
  • Once you get the controls down and feel more confident in dodging the game really opens up and scratches an arcade roguelike experience.
  • You can do a spin move that gives you a shield to block projectiles.
  • Encounter a shop on your journey for limited curses where you get a good and bad modifier.
  • The game thankfully is not that punishing for you hitting walls and floors.
  • Over time you start unlocking new weapons and items to appear in future runs.
  • Unlock a combo counter and this increases how MUCH VP you earn.

Whisker Squadron Survivor Review Cons:

  • The remap controls menu is clunky and not great to use.
  • Quite a grind for VP so upgrades are slow.
  • It makes a horrible beeping noise every time someone talks and it can be quite triggering.
  • No voice work.
  • The music is fine but it doesn’t feel like it fits what the game is or what you are doing.
  • Shooting feels weird, it’s a bit off and not that responsive so it always feels like you are missing shots or the enemy has amazing reflexes.
  • You don’t see a progress bar or anything when on a level.
  • Judging shots in order to avoid damage is really hard to pull off.
  • A lot of the enemies are huge bullet sponges.
  • Runs feel repetitive.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
