This is an Elf Egg… You are a guardian spirit created by the Fairy Queen to look after the heroes of this realm. You are to guide them. Raise them. Help them face the dark terrors of the world.

Yolk Heroes A Long Tamago Review Pros:

  • Decent graphics.
  • 153.9MB download size.
  • Steam achievements.
  • Full controller support.
  • Graphics settings – fullscreen, always on top, scale, and palette choices (radioactive/beach/coffee/farmer/relaxed/pop punk/slasher/raspberry/silent/citrus/defrost/zy scope/play kid/rain/winter/eggplant/dusk/ice climbing/bouquet/cozy/peachy/electric/meta girl/toxic/frostbite/sunset/funny man).
  • Goes full hog into the Gameboy aesthetic.
  • Three save slots.
  • A menu fairy appears from time to time and acts like a tutorial.
  • Idle adventure gameplay.
  • You can adjust the music so it only plays when you have the screen on top and not when minimized.
  • Idle settings – simulate when off, auto-scroll dialogue, auto queue actions, prioritize a certain state, and event wait time.
  • In-game cutscenes and slightly animated screens.
  • Great cast of characters.
  • The writing is really well done and is done in a minimalist way that suits the game.
  • You can play the game in a variety of ways and even have the game plays itself.
  • The egg-hatching game scenes are brilliant. You have to move a leaf around your egg to protect it from wind, the weather, and any critters. Whilst doing this you have to be mindful of your energy levels and keep the egg temperature in the safe zone. Depending on where the temperature is when hatching will determine your starting stats.
  • Tamagotchi-inspired gameplay where you have to hatch and care for heroes.
  • You also get in-game tutorials but they are optional.
  • The event log will show all actions performed which is handy when you miss something.
  • When they are young you get a timer to show when they will grow, all actions take X amount of real time to complete.
  • You can queue up actions at any time and see the icons at the top of the screen.
  • A face shows if you are keeping your character happy or if you have annoyed or neglected them.
  • When giving the training action you can choose which weapon to use and it shows what state that will change.
  • Some of the actions have a small simple mini-game so you have something to do and add bonus increases and buffs.
  • When a toddler you can have them do errands around the guild hall to earn cash and fight monsters. Again it will auto play but you can speed it up with rhythmic button presses.
  • The gear screen lets you equip weapons and armor when you are old enough to go out on quests.
  • A shop is available to buy and sell items.
  • Combat is on timers and you can stop the arrow in the green zone to do more damage or let it play out.
  • Earn exp from combat and quests to level up and increase your stats.
  • You can stop activities but not with a controller.
  • World map level selection for adventuring.

Yolk Heroes A Long Tamago Review Cons:

  • Cannot remap controls.
  • Button prompts show as the keyboard even when using the controller.
  • You don’t get the menu Fairy on the main options menu.
  • Has sections for text entry but the game doesn’t have a built-in text entry form for the controller meaning you still need the keyboard.
  • Being an idle game doesn’t work well when playing in Steam big screen mode.
  • Slow starter.
  • The music is a mix of Chiptune and royalty-free tracks so it’s all over the place.
  • No way to fast-forward actions or quit them.
  • You have to click on icons to remember what they are.
  • The mouse cursor stays on the screen at all times even when using the controller.

Summary

Yolk Heroes: A Long Tamago is a game that fully embraces the Gameboy aesthetic, offering decent graphics and a variety of palette choices. The game has a download size of 153.9MB and supports full controller use. It also features Steam achievements and allows for various graphics settings, including fullscreen, always on top, scale, and palette choices.

The game offers idle adventure gameplay with a great cast of characters. The writing is minimalist, suiting the game’s style, and you can play the game in a variety of ways, even having the gameplay itself. The game also features in-game cutscenes and slightly animated screens.

One of the unique features of the game is its Tamagotchi-inspired gameplay where you have to hatch and care for heroes. The egg-hatching game scenes are particularly brilliant, requiring you to move a leaf around your egg to protect it from wind, weather, and critters while managing your energy levels and keeping the egg temperature in the safe zone. The temperature at hatching determines your starting stats.

As your characters grow, you can queue up actions at any time and see the icons at the top of the screen. A face shows if you are keeping your character happy or if you have annoyed or neglected them. When giving the training action, you can choose which weapon to use and it shows what state that will change. Some of the actions have a small simple mini-game to add bonus increases and buffs.

When a toddler, your characters can do errands around the guild hall to earn cash and fight monsters. The gear screen lets you equip weapons and armor when you are old enough to go out on quests. A shop is available to buy and sell items. Combat is on timers and you can stop the arrow in the green zone to do more damage or let it play out. You earn exp from combat and quests to level up and increase your stats.

However, the game does have some limitations. It doesn’t work well when playing in Steam big screen mode and is a slow starter. The music is a mix of Chiptune and royalty-free tracks, so it’s all over the place. There’s no way to fast-forward actions or quit them, and you have to click on icons to remember what they are. The mouse cursor stays on the screen at all times, even when using the controller. Despite these limitations, Yolk Heroes: A Long Tamago offers a fantastic spin on the Tamagotchi genre and makes one hell of a compelling experience. A new benchmark for the genre has been achieved.
