Arma Reforger Review Pros:

  • Decent graphics.
  • 18.49GB Download size.
  • Steam achievements.
  • Full controller support.
  • Cross Platform multiplayer.
  • Graphics settings – quality preset, window mode, render scale, fidelity FX super-resolution 1.0, v-sync, FPS limit, draw distance, nearby depth of field, post-processing, anti-aliasing, foliage smoothing, shadow quality, texture quality, and environment quality.
  • Can remap controls for both the controller and the keyboard.
  • Invert axis and sensitivity sliders for the mouse.
  • Field of view sliders for – first person, vehicles, aim down sights, and third person.
  • Four game modes – Play, Multiplayer, Scenarios, and Game Master.
  • The workshop lets you download fan player creations, rate them, follow creators, etc. Full mod manager where you can turn them off and on individually.
  • Scenarios are pre-made and player-made set missions.
  • Training scenario that acts like a tutorial.
  • Multiplayer has a full server browser, you have player-hosted games and Official servers, and you can favorite servers and see recently played.
  • Game Master has two locations – Everon and Arland.
  • The Game master mode is where you are fully in charge of the game, you can decide and place enemies, and vehicles, and provide objectives and spawn points. It has a crazy amount of customisation and options.
  • Decent loading times.
  • The field manual is the biggest in-game manual I have ever seen for a game! It is all split up into sections and then smaller parts and has images and text.
  • You make your own experience by downloading or creating your own scenarios.
  • It’s a better more streamlined game for the creation of scenarios than Arma 3.
  • First-person shooter sim gameplay.
  • Gorgeous locations.
  • Different weather effects and day/night cycle.
  • Play how and where you want.
  • The guns all feel different and are more sim than arcade making it harder to just aim and shoot.
  • Decent voice work.
  • Arma vision is a camera tool to the next level where you can freely fly around and see things, get descriptions, etc.
  • Doing the base tour (optional) gives you a full rundown on everything around, you are free to walk around in any order and you get a voice-over describing the tools and structures in the base.
  • You cannot pause the game so you are always on edge.
  • The controls are great and familiar so if you have played first-person shooters before it will feel the same.
  • A full 3D world with 360-degree camera control.
  • What I like is that the game feels LIKE Arma but it has the same feel as Operation Flashpoint or even Day Z.
  • A really tense atmosphere that always has you on edge.
  • Even on lower graphics settings the game still runs really well and you can still make out key structures and enemies.
  • The multiplayer supports PvP and PvE.
  • It’s a game that appeals to many types of shooter fans.

Arma Reforger Review Cons:

  • No benchmark test option for graphics.
  • The Game Master mode is huge and with that, it is very daunting and has so many moving pieces you need a video or six to just understand the basics.
  • Using a controller is fine but it not only uses every button, it also has every button using a combination of buttons.
  • Cannot actually pause the game even in single-player.
  • Very daunting overall as you just get a main menu and the game doesn’t try and guide you through your first few hours.
  • I wish the controls menu could be more streamlined as you have so many button commands and even for basic info you have to scroll loads of menus and tabs.
  • Had a few crash-to-desktop moments.
  • The hit detection feels a bit off and not as satisfying.
  • Slowdown happens more when in built-up areas, fire everywhere, and vehicles.

Summary

Arma Reforger offers a visually appealing experience with decent graphics and a manageable download size of 18.49GB. The game supports Steam achievements and full controller support, enhancing its accessibility. One of its standout features is cross-platform multiplayer, allowing players from different systems to join in the action. The game provides extensive graphics settings, including quality presets, window mode, render scale, and more, ensuring players can tailor the visuals to their preferences. Additionally, controls can be remapped for both controllers and keyboards, with options to invert axes and adjust sensitivity sliders for the mouse. Field of view sliders are available for various perspectives, including first-person, vehicles, aim down sights, and third-person.

Arma Reforger features four game modes: Play, Multiplayer, Scenarios, and Game Master. The workshop allows players to download, rate, and follow fan-created content, with a full mod manager to enable or disable mods individually. Scenarios offer both pre-made and player-made missions, while the training scenario acts as a tutorial. Multiplayer includes a comprehensive server browser with player-hosted games and official servers, along with options to favorite and revisit servers. The Game Master mode, set in locations like Everon and Arland, gives players full control over the game, allowing them to place enemies, vehicles, objectives, and spawn points with a high degree of customization.

The game boasts decent loading times and an extensive field manual, which is the largest in-game manual seen in a game, divided into sections with images and text. Players can create their own experiences by downloading or creating scenarios, making it a more streamlined game for scenario creation compared to Arma 3. The first-person shooter sim gameplay is set in gorgeous locations, although the game lacks a benchmark test option for graphics. The Game Master mode, while expansive, can be daunting due to its complexity, requiring multiple videos to understand the basics. The controller setup, although functional, uses every button and combinations, making it somewhat cumbersome.

One downside is the inability to pause the game, even in single-player mode, which can be stressful. The controls menu could be more streamlined, as it requires navigating through numerous menus and tabs for basic information. The game has experienced a few crash-to-desktop moments, and the hit detection feels slightly off, reducing satisfaction. Performance slowdowns occur more frequently in built-up areas with fire and vehicles. However, the game features different weather effects and a day/night cycle, allowing players to play how and where they want. The guns feel distinct and are more simulation-based than arcade, making aiming and shooting more challenging. The voice work is decent, and the Arma vision camera tool allows for free movement and detailed descriptions.

Overall, Arma Reforger provides a tense atmosphere that keeps players on edge. Even on lower graphics settings, the game runs well, with key structures and enemies remaining visible. The multiplayer supports both PvP and PvE, appealing to various shooter fans. Despite some drawbacks, such as the daunting Game Master mode and complex controls, the game successfully captures the essence of Arma while offering a streamlined experience for scenario creation.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
