  • Isometric viewpoint.
  • Turn-based combat.

  • The enemy turns are fast, the animations show them as sped up.
  • You can end your turn whenever you want.
  • Enemy health bars show above their heads.
  • Swap units is a simple button press to make it easier and faster.
  • If you have ever played an RPG or JRPG then you will slide right into it, it’s very familiar and aligned with the genre.
  • Recruit and create your own party of adventurers.
  • Very much a 90s-style JRPG and one for enthusiasts.
  • Use the terrain and environment to your advantage.
  • The Story is good but it is just so slow, the characters are memorable and well told but the pacing is.
  • Storytelling is a mix of standard storytelling and a narrated choose-your-own-adventure style.
  • Full-party management for actions like gear, hiring, and firing along with promotions.
  • Buy and sell gear and items with workshops and vendors.
  • You can upgrade weapons and gear with resources, materials, and cash.
  • The Guild is where you go to get – main quests, normal quests, training quests, sub-quests, and sub-stories.
  • Each quest will show victory and defeat conditions, rewards, and any special requirements.
  • At times you may have to do certain quests or finish X amount of them until the next story beat unlocks, either way, the Guild will tell you what needs to be done.
  • Before any combat, you get to prepare and save or load your game.
  • Traps are a big part and you can place these before a battle or trigger enemy ones.
  • Once the game finally gets going it is rewarding and deep but it’s just a slog.

Goblin Slayer Another Adventurer Nightmare Feast Review Cons:

  • You cannot remap the controls.
  • There are not a lot of game option choices.
  • A slow starter with a huge story dump at the beginning, I’m talking a good 20 minutes of text.
  • You cannot actually skip the opening story dump. And in fact you cannot skip any of the interactions and cutscenes and they are long and drawn out.
  • For some reason, my save never registered and I had to rewatch all the opening story segments again.
  • No English voice choice.
  • The controls are fiddly and awkward.
  • It is a long time from the start until you have any mention of the game saving.
  • It’s not a game for traveling on public transport.
  • When getting story or character interactions you cannot save your game.
  • The tutorial pop-ups are more vague than helpful.
  • It took just over an hour until I could perform my first game save with no auto-save options.

Summary

Goblin Slayer Another Adventurer Nightmare Feast offers a mixed bag of experiences. On the positive side, the game boasts decent graphics and a manageable 2.6GB download size. It provides 20 save slots and offers both Japanese and English language options. Players can choose between two game difficulties—Story and Adventure—catering to different play styles. The JRPG gameplay is complemented by anime-style art cutscenes with Japanese voice acting, adding to the immersive experience. Interactions within the game can be skipped or set to auto-scroll, and the tutorial game manual is accessible at any time. The game features a mix of in-game and art avatar cutscenes, an isometric viewpoint, and turn-based combat. Players can inspect enemies to learn their weaknesses, and a grid system helps with aiming shots and managing movement allowance. The ability to roll dice for stronger attacks and the presence of action points (AP) for each character add strategic depth. The fast enemy turns and sped-up animations keep the pace brisk, and players can end their turn whenever they want. Enemy health bars are displayed above their heads, and swapping units is a simple button press. The game is familiar to RPG and JRPG enthusiasts, allowing players to recruit and create their own party of adventurers. The 90s-style JRPG elements and the ability to use terrain and environment to one’s advantage are notable highlights.

However, the game is not without its drawbacks. The story, while good, suffers from slow pacing, and the characters, though memorable, are part of a narrative that drags. The storytelling is a mix of standard narration and a choose-your-own-adventure style, which may not appeal to everyone. Full-party management for actions like gear, hiring, firing, and promotions is available, but the process can be cumbersome. The Guild, where players obtain quests, provides detailed information on victory and defeat conditions, rewards, and special requirements, but the need to complete certain quests to unlock the next story beat can feel restrictive. The game allows for preparation and saving before combat, and traps play a significant role, but the overall experience can be a slog. The inability to remap controls and the limited game option choices are additional frustrations. The game starts slowly with a lengthy story dump, and interactions and cutscenes cannot be skipped, making the initial experience tedious. Issues with save registration and the lack of an English voice option further detract from the experience. The controls are fiddly and awkward, and it takes a long time before the game mentions saving. The game is not suitable for playing on public transport, and saving during story or character interactions is not possible. The tutorial pop-ups are vague and unhelpful, and it takes over an hour to perform the first game save, with no auto-save options available.

In summary, Goblin Slayer Another Adventurer Nightmare Feast has its strengths, such as decent graphics, language options, and strategic gameplay elements. However, its slow pacing, unskippable cutscenes, and cumbersome controls may deter some players. The game is best suited for dedicated JRPG enthusiasts who are willing to invest time and effort to uncover its rewarding and deep gameplay. It is an old-school JRPG in every way and nails that feel and playstyle but it does show how far JRPG have come.
