Review: Dead by Daylight: Special Edition (PlayStation 4)

Dead by Daylight is a multiplayer (4vs1) horror game where one player takes on the role of the savage Killer, and the other four players play as Survivors, trying to escape the Killer and avoid being caught, tortured and killed.

Pros:

  • Decent graphics.
  • 9.41GB Download size.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • Easy controls.
  • Tutorial section- Read through chapters covering the game, Survivors and the killer.
  • Special edition- Includes all released DLC.
  • Game play- Play as a survivor and escape by turning on generators and opening the door or by the escape hatch. You could also play as a killer and you have to catch the survivors and hook them up in order to sacrifice them.
  • Daily missions to earn bonus blood points.
  • Emotes- Follow me and point.
  • Four V one game.
  • So atmospheric thanks to the bone chilling music and dark tone. Fog cakes the level and this can actually be increased or decreased thanks to offerings.
  • Survivor- You can vault, Crouch in long grass, Loot chests, Heal yourself and others and throw pallets down as you run around.
  • Generators- You need to turn 5 on in order to open the gate to escape. You can co op the generators and fix it faster. Fixing it is a QTE where you have to press l1 in the specific zone. Two parts to the zone and they determine how much you fix and how many bonus blood points you earn.
  • Hatch- Opens when you are on your own and everyone else is dead.
  • Seven survivors to choose from. Each one has a few unique abilities but apart from that they are all near enough the same.
  • 6 killers who are all unique.
  • Customize- You can change your hat, Top, Trousers and shoes.
  • Offerings- These are a one time use items that can change the fog density or increases the chance of a certain level coming up or grant bonus blood points and more.
  • Items again is a die and lose it affair. You can go in with an item like medi kit, Tool kit or torch etc. Add ons are used to buff the item further so for example you can buff the medkit to heal more than a standard medkit.
  • Load out- Choose any items and add ons you have and an offering. Anything you take is at risk. If you die you lose the items for ever but if you survive you keep them.
  • You can hear the killers heartbeat and its this that lets you know how close they are.
  • Every game is different.
  • Four modes- Play with friends, Be a survivor, Be the killer or un ranked kill your friends.
  • Blood points- Acts like EXP. You earn them by doing actions like escaping, Surviving, co op actions, Fixing generators and even looting.
  • Web- Random items and perks generate in your web. Buy them and fill the web to level up and unlcok another set of random items and perks.
  • Iridescent shards- Harder to get, These are used to buy perks of other characters and allow you to use them. The four perks on offer change every week.
  • Once you are dead you can safely quit or spectate.
  • Character option- Read back stories and what unique perks they have.
  • Online rank- Goes up and down based on performance.
  • Killers can attack survivors- First attack hurts them and slows them then the next hit will down them.
  • Realistic clever system for the killer. The killer can see foot prints when you run or blood trails when survivors have been hit once.
  • Camera- Survivor is 3rd person and killer is first person.
  • Asymmetric levels.
  • When you are down the killer will have to carry to the hooks. When this is happening you can attempt to wriggle free.
  • Perks- Earn them by playing and leveling up, You can have more perks active as you level and unlock more perk slots.
  • Items- Torches can stun killers to maps showing locations to keys and med packs or tool kits to fix and sabotage faster. All items are on a common to legendary rating which improves the amount of time you can use it.
  • Totems- Randomly placed breaking these can stop the killer from activating skill moves and basically slow him down.
  • Levels have randomized lay outs from the loot chests to generators and totems and the hatch.
  • Best played with headphones as the game uses audio cues a lot. A tune plays before a QTE comes up on fixing generators, Cue plays when you are near the hatch. Its all very clever.
  • Addictive.
  • So much fun to play.
  • Tense yet satisfying game play.
  • Levels are varied from a farm to insane asylums and car wrecks. The scenery is really good with loads of hiding spots and detail.

Cons:

  • Online issues from cannot connect to host to disconnects.
  • Disconnects in game cost you your offerings, Items and add ons.
  • No proper tutorial.
  • Doesn’t explain perks, Items, Add ons or offerings very well at all.
  • No voice chat.
  • Mike Myers Halloween DLC is currently not available all though it has been stated it is coming, We dont know if it is free or paid for.
  • No offline modes.
  • Needs a practice area.
  • Cannot only delete dailies once you hit the 3 cap.
  • Party disbands after every match.
  • Lag which absolutely ruins it.
  • Loading times are very temperamental.

Summary

Dead by daylight is the best fun you can have! A lot of people may say its like Friday the 13th game but to be honest its completely different. Here you have to survive in a small area and avoid the killer. The atmosphere in this is a lot higher than you think. The hiding in bushes and seeing the killer run past is crazy adrenaline pumping. Killers have limited view so you do get in situations where a killer can be right next to you! I just lve how immediate it all is and how the fixing the generators is fun. Messing up on the QTE unleashes a loud explosion, Its all nail biting stuff. The blood points are doled out at a high pace and this means you get to see a lot of the perks and items on offer. If you want to experience a proper horror movie experience then this is a good shout. From being carried by the killer to being hooked and left to die, The game just nails so much all the time. In short its cheap and well worth playing solo or with friends its brilliant.
