Review: Puyo Puyo Tetris (PlayStation 4)

Two puzzle game juggernauts collide as Tetris, one of the largest-selling and recognized brands in gaming history, and Puyo Puyo from SEGA have combined to create a fun-to-play, fast-paced, competitive party game.

Pros:

  • Big bright colourful graphics.
  • 1.89GB download size.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • Four play types- Adventure, Solo arcade, Multiplayer arcade and Online.
  • Dedicated lessons section to learn all the techniques to become a master!
  • Full stats screen.
  • Theatre- Watch replays, Play cutscenes and listen to sound tracks.
  • Eight different control layout options including one handed.
  • Supports 4 player online/offline.
  • Solo arcade- Vs, Fusion, Swap, Party, Big bang and challenge.
  • Online- Puzzle league (ranked) and free play (unranked). You can host or search for a room and also set up a private room for just friends to join.
  • Can watch other peoples replays.
  • Handy description of each mode from the main menu.
  • Earn credits based off performance.
  • Shop- Buy new Tetris/Puyo skins, Avatars and alternate sound bites.
  • Unlock new backgrounds and music from playing campaign.
  • Save replay option after each game.
  • Can skip/Fast forward dialogue.
  • Each level in campaign has a 3 star rating system.
  • 16 initial characters with a further 8 to unlock.
  • Tetris feels snappy and responsive.
  • Puyo Puyo is every bit as good as previous iterations.
  • You can play where Tetris and Puyo are in the same game! Or where you play a game of each along side each other.
  • Before a game you can change the soundtrack, Set the background etc.
  • Handicap system that can be set for players and AI.
  • Campaign is a good way to introduce the different game modes and rack up credits.

Cons:

  • No Japanese audio what so ever in the game.
  • Handicap options are confusing as to what is what.
  • Adventure mode has difficulty spikes.
  • Learning curve for Puyo Puyo and the other new modes.

Summary

This for many people will be the definitive version of Tetris. It allows you to have a whole array of Tetris skins but also add the bonus of Puyo Puyo and you have yourself a lot of game for very little money. Online is solid and fun and like I say, So many different modes mean you always have something new to play. In a nutshell this is an awesome game worth everyones time.
