Squarena Review Pros:

  • Nice graphics.
  • 144.7MB download size.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • You get the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game.
  • Five background choices.
  • Rules options – gravity (normal/high/low), energy (normal/infinite), lives (1 to 3), health (low/normal/high), and power-ups (invincibility/rapid fire/healing/flight/mega ammo).
  • Stats screen.
  • Unlock new abilities, etc, with achievements.
  • Four-player local support.
  • Character creator, every time you select a slot and you can change team/color, skin, and cosmetics.
  • Optional tutorial missions for each game type.
  • In-game character interactions.
  • You have four actions: jump, teleport, shield, and shoot.
  • Single player has two game modes – racing, and climb as high as possible.
  • You can climb walls with multiple jumps.
  • A lot of fun can be had in multiplayer, especially in the races.
  • Takes elements from Heave Ho and N++.

Squarena Review Cons:

  • Cannot remap the controls.
  • You can’t actually bring up the controls.
  • The controls are very loose, and the jump does not feel good.
  • You cannot change the camera even in single player, so it can be hard to make out obstacles and your own character.
  • The menus are cold and uninviting, but also not always clear.
  • So much stuff like levels is locked away with no clear indication on how to unlock them or even see them.
  • The general gameplay loop isn’t that engaging, and it’s more of a social game than a single-player affair.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
