When The Light Dies Preview (Steam Early Access)

When The Light Dies Preview, When the Light Dies is a survival game with roguelite elements set in a desolate, frozen wilderness. Step into a murky world of shadow and obscurity as a lone survivor fighting to keep the darkness and the horrors that lurk within at bay.

When The Light Dies Preview Pros:

  • Decent pixel art graphics.
  • Download size.
  • Full controller support.
  • Graphics settings – screen mode, shadows, brightness slider, and contrast slider.
  • Controller settings – aim lock, and you can remap controls.
  • Roguelike survival gameplay.
  • Tutorial level that is replayable.
  • Light plays a huge part as you cannot see anything when you have no light, light only shows a radius around you.
  • Cold can affect and eventually kill you so lighting fires and being indoors are key to survival.
  • Twin stick controls.
  • The stamina bar dictates how much you can run at one time.
  • Sanity is used when you use a special ability, as your sanity goes down enemies become stronger.
  • Earn currency at the end of enemy waves.
  • As you do things and kill enemies you earn exp and when you level up you pick one of three upgrades.
  • Run-based gameplay loop.
  • Three types of currency – teeth, eyes, and pulsating hearts are used to buy permanent upgrades and unlocks.
  • Handy hover text on the ui and items.
  • End of run breakdown.
  • Unlock and equip one of four starting weapons.
  • Has a great tense atmosphere.
  • You can find other camps which enables you to explore the world a bit.

When The Light Dies Preview Cons:

  • Bare minimum graphics settings.
  • No Steam achievements.
  • Has a slower pace than you would think.
  • The stick-as-a-mouse system isn’t always ideal for menus.
  • Levelling up in game (which happens a lot!) causes the game to momentarily pause then the upgrades show. You don’t get any level-up text, notification, or noise.
  • Only one character at the moment.
  • The gameplay is slow and doesn’t offer anything unique at the moment.
  • It doesn’t have the hook from what I’ve played that keeps you coming back.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
