Skinwalker Review Pros

  • Nice graphics.
  • 239.6MB download size.
  • Platinum trophy.
  • Stealth survival gameplay.
  • Notes around the world help with objectives, and button prompts help with the controls.
  • First-person view.
  • Not all Reindeer are out for you, so you are always on edge.
  • Full 3D snow-covered forest game world.
  • You are getting stalked all the time by the Reindeer! They look sweet and innocent, but when they spot you, they get on their hind legs and get red eyes and hunt you down!
  • A lot of jump scares and running scared through the woods.
  • The world is snow, and with that, you have to manage your warmth; stay out too long, and you freeze. Find logs, books, or anything wooden and burn them in your cabin fire to regain warmth.
  • Items you put in the dire give you an amount of burning time, so use that to gauge what to burn and when.
  • When chased, you get a heartbeat sound, and it quickens, along with adrenaline, and you can escape if you run and hide fast enough.
  • The game is very basic in looks and gameplay, but that doesn’t detract from the fun; it’s a smart, clever little game.
  • The Reindeer are clever, they react when you look at them, but it’s things like they chase you into the cabin, you hide under the bed and watch him walk around, then leave, but if you leave too soon, he rushes back in!
  • Build and repair elements within the world to escape the forest.
  • Find tools to help with your task and clothes to help keep you warm out in the wild.
  • Getting caught has you respawn almost instantly back in the cabin.
  • Minimal soundtrack, but the sound effects are tuned perfectly for scares.
  • Sensitivity slider, sound volume slider, and light bar on and off are your game options.
  • The controller light bar flashes when you are being chased.
  • Find bits of wood in the world, and you can just drop them in your cabin and stockpile them.
  • A lot of fun to play in short bursts or around Halloween time.

Animals wander and graze in the snow covered forest of Skinwalker survival horror.

Skinwalker Review Cons

  • You cannot remap the controls are view them.
  • There are no dedicated tutorials.
  • It takes a few goes to get in the groove; it’s simple, but I’m warning you.
  • It’s a short game, and you may only play it here and there.
  • No replay value, once you’ve seen it once you’ve seen it.
  • The Reindeer, seeing you, feels a bit all over the place, from laser-focused sniper sight to they can’t see me in front of them.
  • Frustrating at times, as it feels like the game hates you and has you constantly surrounded.
  • Sometimes you respawn, and your progress is saved, and sometimes it doesn’t.
  • Run isn’t toggle, it’s hold-down.

Summary

Skinwalker – The Thrills and Highlights of Gameplay:
Skinwalker plunges players into a frozen nightmare where every flicker of firelight is a lifeline, and every shadow hides a predator. The game thrives on stealth survival gameplay, with constant tension from reindeer that shift from innocent to terrifying hunters. Notes scattered across the world guide objectives, while button prompts keep controls accessible. Managing warmth is crucial, forcing players to scavenge wood and burn items in the cabin fire to survive. Jump scares, heartbeat chases, and clever AI reactions keep you on edge, while building, repairing, and scavenging tools add depth to escaping the forest. It’s a smart, clever little game that delivers thrills in short bursts, especially around Halloween.

Skinwalker – Where It Falls Short: Key Negatives:
Despite its chilling atmosphere, Skinwalker struggles with some frustrating flaws. Controls cannot be remapped or even viewed, and there is no dedicated tutorial to ease players in. The game is short, with little replay value once experienced, and the reindeer’s vision swings wildly from laser-focused to oblivious. Progress saving is inconsistent, respawns can feel punishing, and the constant sense of being surrounded sometimes tips into frustration. The lack of a toggle for running and the overall simplicity may leave some players wanting more.

Skinwalker – Immersive Story and Narrative Elements:
Skinwalker is more than survival; it’s a haunting exploration of fear itself. The frozen wilderness becomes a stage for relentless suspense, where every decision feels like a gamble. The narrative is woven through environmental notes and the ever-present threat of the creature that wears many faces. The story is not delivered through cutscenes but through the player’s lived experience of balancing warmth, survival, and the terror of being hunted.

Skinwalker – Visual and Performance Aspects:
Skinwalker offers nice graphics within a full 3D snow-covered forest world. While basic in looks, the visuals support the chilling atmosphere effectively. The minimal soundtrack is tuned perfectly for scares, with sound effects amplifying tension. Performance is smooth, with a small 239.6MB download size and instant respawns keeping the pace brisk. The controller light bar flashing during chases adds a clever touch, and options like sensitivity and sound sliders provide some customisation.

Skinwalker – Overall Verdict: Is It Worth Playing?:
Skinwalker is a short but memorable survival horror experience. Its clever mechanics, icy atmosphere, and constant tension make it fun in bursts, though its simplicity and lack of replay value hold it back from greatness. For players seeking a chilling, adrenaline-fueled adventure, especially during Halloween, Skinwalker delivers enough scares and suspense to be worth a try.

Gaming since the Atari 2600, I enjoy the weirdness in games counting Densha De Go and RC De Go as my favourite titles of all time. I prefer gaming of old where buying games from a shop was a thing, Being social in person was a thing. Join me as I attempt to adapt to this new digital age!
